A. You are to carefully consider where you are to place the following items of a
standard IT installation into a rack located in a Network Room. Ergonomics,
Safety and Security are all involved. Sketch on your answer-sheet diagram each
of the following items in an appropriate location:
– a rack-mounted (heavy) UPS
– a (dangerous*) fibre patchbay
– copper (RJ45) patchbay
– 2 (*) Fibre Switching-Hubs
– 2 ‘copper’ (RJ45) Switching-Hubs
– a ‘Blade’ (rack-mounted) Server
– a Security Camera
– an Air-Conditioner (for cooling)
– an appropriate Fire Extinguisher
– an Optical Smoke-Detector

– a CET & its rack connection point
– a rack Temperature Sensor
– 2 Security Appliances and 2 Modems
– a Server Log/Cable Record book
– a light and switch for quality lighting
– a spare power-point for repair
– incoming cables from the building, within protective surface raceway at points
within ordinary human-trafficable areas (below 2.4 metres) .
– a single Power-Board for the whole rack, plugged into the UPS
– A set of small filters for incoming phone and other aerial cables
– Use an arrow to label where there should be adequate space behind the rack for access during service work.
B. On the page following the rack diagrams on the answer sheet, sketch a network
diagram showing how the networking devices would likely be connected.
(You are encouraged to check that your diagram features ALL of the
devices listed, arranged in a suitable structure likely to function correctly).
