Action Assignment – Assessing Barriers to Information
Objective:
Even in the most information-rich contexts, one can find barriers to accessing information,
resources, services, spaces, etc. if they look closely enough. The objective of this assignment is
to consider the information barriers of others in an information organization/cultural heritage
center of your choice (public library, academic library, museum, etc.).
Instructions:
Type a 2-3 page letter to the manager addressing your concerns about equitable access and
providing justification in academic terms. End the letter with suggestions for
improvements or opportunities. Sending the letter to the manager is at the discretion of the
student. The letter must be submitted to the instructor no later than December 9 at 11:59
PM.
Additional information:
When you visit the library or museum, consider the space, resources, services, and information,
and consider others and how their access may differ from yours.
Ask yourself questions, such as:
In what ways is information-seeking hampered?
What services don’t they offer that they should?
What would help people with mobility issues make their way efficiently and effectively through
the space?
Are the material/collections reflective of different cultures, gender identities, family structures,
and disability experiences?
Is the technology inclusive?
Are there conditions, policies, or attitudes that prevent or make it difficult for populations to use
or enjoy the services?
Is it affordable to all?
You do have the option of taking a focused approach and assessing barriers to information of a
specific population (e.g. the disabled, seniors, homeless, or a marginalized population). You
decide on your approach!
Tips:
Use a professional letter format
Remember your audience
Use clear and concise language
Use examples to illustrate your points
Use critical thinking, be creative and empathic and ensure you provide justification in
academic terms (use at least two scholarly resources). A reference list and citations are
required. The post 2- Assessing Barriers to Information first appeared on homework crew.
