Diversity In The Communications Industry
[ad_1]
The purpose of this assignment is to understand and reflect on the importance of diversity in the communications industry and to recognize and analyze
stereotypes about minority groups. The assignment will help you understand how to strategically plan and create messages for diverse audiences. It should
be 2-3 pages long, double spaced, Times New Roman Size 12 font. First person is acceptable.
The assignment is to watch one of the videos below and then use that as a jumping off point to share your perspective on the importance of appreciating
diversity and inclusion as a mass media professional. Your perspective should be thoughtful and can be informed by other sources (i.e. books or articles) if
you like, although there’s no particular research requirement beyond watching one of the YouTube videos.
Here are some questions to consider:
How are mass media messages (choose your particular discipline of advertising, journalism, public relations or comms studies) improved by an appreciation
for diversity and inclusion?
How can we fairly represent the experiences and perspectives of others who are very different from us?
What kind of experiences have you had that will affect your ability to appreciate diversity and inclusion in your communications education and professional
work?
You should edit your essay careful. My mentor, Judge Ruggero J. Aldisert, used to say, “There is no good writing. Only good rewriting.” So take the time for
multiple drafts. The assignment is not long but you should take the time to make it compelling and persuasive and sincere. In terms of format, you can
choose an approach you like but I suggest you think of this as a blog post to a lay audience of professional readers. So they are not uninformed but also they
might need you to help them see the importance of diversity and inclusion and be convinced to do something about it.
Especially consider that your essay should have a beginning, middle and end. The beginning could just be a compelling lead paragraph telling people what
your perspective is and why it matters. The middle would be the bulk of your essay in which you explain the problem more in detail and your proposed
solution. This is also where you would weave in the thoughts from the presenter on the YouTube video. The end is a simple conclusion statement in a
sentence or short paragraph that can restate your position or send readers off with a dramatic quote or thought to summarize and motivate.
