When it comes to human populations, epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of disease (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). Every year, thousands of people in the United States become ill and die as a result of infectious diseases. As a result, Healthy People in 2030 is shifting its emphasis away from disease prevention and treatment and toward disease prevention and treatment for any type of infectious disease. This subject matter included a study on the prevalence of pertussis among infants. Infants are particularly vulnerable to illness simply because their immune systems are still developing. Pertussis (whooping cough) is a contagious disease that can cause serious illness in babies, young children, adolescents, and adults (CDC, 2017). The primary goal of the study is to administer the Tdap vaccine to pregnant women in order to help protect their unborn children from pertussis. This is a descriptive study in order to better understand each point of view. In order to identify subgroups in populations that may be at the greatest risk for a specific disease or outcome, descriptive studies are conducted. In this study, nurses will be able to generate hypotheses about the relationship between different exposures and diseases or other health-related outcomes as a result of their findings about potential disease causes (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). In order to prevent pertussis in infants younger than 2 months of age, because they are unable to be immunized at this time, researchers are looking into alternative prevention methods. A significant advantage of this study is that it examines the most recent case studies, target cases, desired direction, and baseline data of infants younger than one year old who have cases of pertussis. Because it falls under the “baseline only” category, it has the disadvantage of providing only very limited information. When a category is labeled “baseline only,” it refers to the initial baseline, which means that researchers from the Healthy People 2030 initiative are unsure whether or not they have made any progress toward their pertussis prevention goals.
