PROJECT SUMMARYGeneral DynamicsGeneral Dynamics Corporation (GD) is an American based organization headquartered in Reston, Virginia. This industry is involved in the aerospace and defense industry, and is one of the biggest defense contractors in the United States. Further, the organization has been grown quite strategically over the years and is now a Fortune 100 organizations. Some of company products that the company is involved in creating include; business jets, nuclear-powered submarines, guided-missile destroyers, tanks and armored fighting vehicles.
1.2 Problem statement (Company priorities and Opportunities)The primary area of business for General Dynamics is defense and aerospace technology. The organization, therefore, has the United States Department of Defense as one of its biggest and most meaningful clients. This allows the organization to provide military components and technologies to the United States Army and its related entities.With the designing and manufacturing of General Dynamics’ Viceroy-4 Global Positioning System (GPS) Spaceborne Receiver provides position, velocity, and time information for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) applications. The use of dual antennas for LEO enhances the performance and satellite visibility. Each of the 12 GPS channels can be assigned to either antenna. The design supports an RS-422 interface.THE PROBLEM, the throughput is too low for future market demand.
Objectives, Methodology and ScopeThere is an evident issue within this organization when it comes to the creation and manufacturing of the Viceroy GPSR. The manufacturing of this type of GPS receivers have continued to place General Dynamics at a disadvantage compared to its competitors. To remedy this, this project will implement a LEAN framework.The project will essentially seek to Continuous Improvement: Increase Backend Manufacturing, QA and Testing throughput for High Volume GPSR and future products. Market Changes: Shipping 100+ Viceroy shipsets a year vs ~20 shipset in ’20-’21. New Team Members: Ideas to improved Viceroy business process.
General Dynamics is predominantly involved in the creation of aerodynamic and defense systems, so these part and devises will be manufactured in the facility in Scottsdale Arizona..
