Case Study: Medicare and Medicaid Patients
Review Chapter 13 in Tong, and the Case Study presented on page 336, Cape Fear Endocrinology and Metabolic Associates.
Think about this – Cape Fear Endocrinology and Metabolic Associates are the only endocrine specialist in their county. For reasons of cost-control, they do not accept either Medicare or Medicaid patients. As a result of this policy, people in this county do not have access to specialists for treatment of their chronic diseases (for example, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and gout).
Answer the following questions in a 2-3 page assignment, citing your sources in APA format:
- Is Cape Fear’s policy ethical? Evaluate it by applying the various ethical theories discussed earlier in the course and in the textbooks.
- If an employee of Cape Fear opposes this policy, yet needs to keep their job, how should the employee deal with their predicament? Keep quiet? Protest?
- Should the employee opposed to this policy try to reason with the physicians or administration?
