Review your readings and consider Case Study #2, on page 77 of Tong. Then, answer the case study questions in a 3 to 4 page assignment citing your sources using APA format.
Case Study –
Dr. Berkeley, a primary care physician, works for a managed care organization that requires prior approval for diagnostic services and treatment. In many cases, medically indicated care has been denied to one of his patients because the individual did not meet the statistical profile the managed care company uses to establish criteria for health/disease/illness. Dr. Berkeley is outraged, but realizes that he will lose significant income if he breaks his contract with the managed care organization, or if they remove him from their list of physicians.
- In your essay, explore the pros and cons of using non-normative standards of health and disease in this case. Do the same with normative standards.
- Is it unethical for the physician to compromise patient care in order to stay enrolled in the managed care organization? Why or why not?
Note: Please make sure you focus on the course and the issues at hand in your essay. Connect your written work to the literature we are reading, and maintain an academic focus. Relevance, credibility and use of referenced material is always important. I expect proper grammar and spelling. This is a minimum requirement; Deviations from this will hurt your grade.
