Module 02 Discussion – Pharmacological Treatments
Directions:
Over the last several decades, the field of psychopathology and the study of psychological disorders have gradually moved away from exploring social and environmental issues and moved toward the biological/neurological understanding of disorders. This has led to significant advancements in medication-based treatments.
Treating psychological disorders through medication can often be faster, more effective, and cost less when compared to traditional psychotherapy. At the same time, there are substantial risks associated with becoming overly reliant on medication.
In your initial post, address the following:
- In your opinion, has society become too reliant on medication-based treatments for psychological disorders? What about for medical conditions in general?
- What might be some of the long-term consequences of overprescribing medications?
