By Day 5

Respond to at least one of your colleagues’ post and determine whether you are able to understand the “whole picture” of the data or understand the data in its entirety. What might you add to their display and why? What might you change to their display and why?

As a researcher, it is essential to understand the significant role that having well-organized data plays in the success of your research. Typically, social researchers conduct studies with large population sizes, making it vital to properly categorize similar data (Frankfort-Nachmias, 2018). While most research is explained through numeric findings, the use of visuals can be useful when presenting statistical information (Frankfort-Nachmias, 2018). Depending on the information that is being presented, specific graph types can be more beneficial than others in particular situations.

Research suggests that pie charts are recommended when classifying nominal or ordinal information (Frankfort-Nachmias, 2018). More specifically, pie charts are useful when displaying different “frequencies or percentages” (Frankfort-Nachmias, 2018). Traditionally, a pie chart is presented as a circle that equals 100% (Frankfort-Nachmias, 2018). Within this circle, there are distinct sections of information presented as percentages representing specific data (Wagner, 2016).

For this assignment, I chose the chart titled “High School Longitudinal Study 2009 Dataset”. I decided to evaluate the information found in row three titled, “T1 Parent 1: highest level of education”.  Understating that this information is a categorical value, more specifically an ordinal measure, I concluded that a pie chart would be a good fit. I believe it adequately and clearly displays the information presented while also including the exact percentage associated with the information. As shown above, there are six possible answer choices to the given question.
