Guidelines for completing Assignment #1: Statement of the Problem –
Begin with a Statement of the Problem (at least 2 pages, no more than 3 pages)
This should include (a) a clear statement that the problem exists, based on research (b) evidence that supports the existence of the problem, (c) evidence of an existing trend that has led to the problem, (d) include definitions of major concepts and terms (this can be provided under a subheading, but doesn’t have to be presented in this format), (e) provide information about the prevalence of problem and identify those groups most at risk for experiencing the problem.

What We Know and What we Don’t Know (1/2 page)
Clearly state what is the problem. Discuss the evidence of what we know about “the problem” and use citation to support these arguments/statements. Then, briefly discuss the area of need (in relation to the problem) and the lack of evidence in the literature.
Target Audience (1/2 page)
Discuss who is affected and/or who benefits and how.
Factors/Definition of Terms (1/2 page)
Provide conceptual, scientific definitions and appropriate references if necessary. Include a discussion about the factors/ variables that influence the problem (i.e., age, gender, orientation, race, religion, SES, ethnicity, geographic location, education, etc.).
Purpose of the Study (1/2 page)
Clearly state, using a sentence that begins with “The purpose of this study is to address the following research question. . .” Clearly state the research question.
