Discussion – Week 3

Until recently, addictions that were not associated with a substance of some kind were viewed very differently from substance addictions. In fact–one could argue that to many professionals in the mental health field, these were not truly “addictions” at all. However, recent research has supported that many of the same processes, including biological and sociological considerations, are present in behavioral addictions just as they are in substance addictions.

The release of the DSM-5 included some very important changes in the way addictions are described. For the first time, the diagnosis “gambling disorder” replaced “pathological gambling” as the former more accurately recognizes the behavior as an addiction rather than a failure of self-control. Further, consideration is now being given to other behaviors which—once the individual loses the ability to effectively control them—can become addictions. These include otherwise “normal” behaviors such as shopping, eating, sex, and social media.

For this Discussion, you should select a behavioral addiction discussed in Chapter 5 of your text. Please go to the Walden Library and locate two journal articles from the last 5 years that are associated with the behavioral addiction you selected. You will use these articles and your text as supporting resources for this Discussion.

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the behavioral addiction you selected, including basic criteria and prevalence of the addiction, as well as cultural influences and considerations. Then, describe one commonly used treatment protocol and one significant treatment challenge for this addiction. Lastly, identify how you could integrate a strength-based perspective in your work with this addiction.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.
