Publication Strategies

Publishing your writing is the end goal to the creative writing process. It is an exciting step, but it can also be difficult. In order to help writers with publication, the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) disseminates information about all aspects of the publication process and provides many services for writers looking to improve and publish their work. This resource and others will help you find a potential publisher for the short story you developed in Weeks 1–4. For this Discussion, you will write a query letter appropriate to the publisher and post it in the Discussion Forum thread to give and receive feedback from your peers.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the AWP website in the Learning Resources.
  • Consider the information listed about each publisher.
    • What kinds of stories are considered acceptable? What are elements of a short story required by publishers?
  • Review the websites regarding query letters listed in the Required Resources.
  • Consider the following questions regarding writing a query letter:
    • How might you describe your short story in a query letter? How is your story unique?
    • How might you best represent yourself as an author? What are the most effective elements of a query letter to ensure your short story will be considered by a publisher?
  • Choose two of the Learning Resources to write about for this Discussion Assignment.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a 2- to 3-paragraph evaluation of at least one strategy for writing a query letter directed to a publisher. Be sure to cite at least two of this week’s Learning Resources and to include the following:

  • Describe how that strategy might be of value when writing a query letter.
  • Explain how you might apply this strategy when writing a query letter representing yourself and your short story.

Be sure to support your ideas by connecting them to the week’s Learning Resources, or something you have read, heard, seen, or experienced.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Respond by Day 5 to at least one of your colleague’s postings in one or more of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing question.
  • Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
  • Offer and support an opinion.
  • Validate an idea with your own experience.
  • Make a suggestion.
  • Expand on your colleague’s posting.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.

For this week’s discussion you will evaluate strategies for writing effective query letters to publishers.

Make sure you read the discussion instructions carefully, and make you cite at least 2 examples from this week’s resources in your main post.

You will write a query letter as part of your week 5 application assignment, so reflecting on effective strategies (for writing this type of letter) will help you write a letter of your own later in the week.

For convenience, I will re-post the most pertinent parts of the week 5 discussion instructions below.

Chad.
