The cognitive theoretical orientation focuses on cognitive processes
The cognitive theoretical orientation focuses on cognitive processes and holds that cognitions, or ideas, beliefs, and attitudes, are what influence one’s conduct (Cervone & Pervin,2019). While a social cognitive theoretical orientation believes that one’s cognitions are influenced by one’s environment and social interactions, as well as one’s experiences, which then guide one’s behavior, a social cognitive theoretical orientation believes that one’s cognitions are influenced by one’s experiences (Cervone & Pervin,2019).
Social cognitive theory distinguishes among three modes of agency: direct personal agency; proxy agency that relies on others to act on one’s behest to secure desired outcomes; and collective agency exercised through group action (Bandura,2002). In personal agency exercised individually, people bring their influence to bear directly on themselves and their environment in managing their lives (Bandura,2002). The difference is that a cognitive theoretical orientation focuses primarily on cognitions and believes that they are the dominant forces driving social interaction and behavior, whereas a social cognitive theoretical orientation believes that cognitions are influenced by social interactions and the environment, and that these factors then guide one’s behavior. The similarity is that both place a strong focus on cognitions as a driving force in behavior. Humans are social beings who are influenced by their environment and social interactions, social cognitive theoretical orientation is more comprehensive than cognitive theoretical orientation.
