One of the research ideas that I have had was to utilize the families who have been served by my non-profit to follow their lives over the next 5-10 years to determine if the services provided to them lead to long term positive future lifestyle choices. My non-profit assists families who are searching for loved ones who are victims of human trafficking, and the victims themselves through medical and psychological service referrals and in as many cases as possible, free of charge. I would love to find out if these services effectively provide positive outcomes for quality of life. Based on statistics, study populations would likely start between 16-25 years old for female subjects.
According to the American Psychological Association (2013), it is ethically important to ensure there are measures in place to protect the participants of research as well as the data gathered. For this study, since we will have access to personal information including medical history, we need to be cognizant of participant acknowledgement and agreement to share their information for the purposes of the study. Just because we have access to the information doesn’t mean we can utilize it without additional permission from the participant with the full understanding of how, when, where, and what will be used. Informed consent to research will ensure we are following ethical policies and protecting both the integrity of the company and the privacy of the participants (APA, 2017).
This study will influence positive social change by evaluating the success of specific therapies and medical treatments on reducing trauma and addiction leading to healthier living. In the future, others experiencing different types of trauma can utilize these approaches to accelerate their healing.
