Communicate in a clear and structured mannerThe THEM ProjectIn Term 1 you will prepare a project plan and proposal for a research project to beundertaken in Term 2. The project is an excellent opportunity to focus on an aspect of yourchosen field that you are particularly interested in.The Project is individual and based on a research question chosen by you (and agreed byone of your lecturers) focusing on an aspect relating to your degree programme within theTHEM area. It is a 5000 word investigation into an issue in an organisation/industry (worth90% of the module mark) and a 1000 word reflection on skills developed in undertaking theproject (worth 10% of the module mark). The project should have a strategic element (forexample solving a problem or critically investigating a management issue) and it may bebased on secondary and/or primary research. Your work can be presented as a dissertationa report or a consultancy project and it is important that you showcase critical ability inyour work. The project can be structured in various ways but usually it involves thefollowing sections: abstract table of contents introduction literature review methodologyfindings and analysis conclusion and references.You will be provided support on undertaking the project in Term 1 and 2. This will includeguidance on how to frame a research topic developing a research question and objectivescompleting a literature review and research design and analysis.The Business Professional3Suggested Project StructureFor an individual project based on a question of your choice (and agreed by one of yourlecturers) you should ideally follow the structure below. Note that the word count for eachsection is merely a recommendation.Title PageThe Title of the project: This should reflect the specific focus of the project.Student number (your name must not be included).Programme name and year of submission.AbstractA maximum of 300 words (not to be included in the total word count) a summary of theproject aim approach and results.Table of ContentsThis page lists the main parts of the project together with their corresponding pagenumbers.Introduction (Chapter 1 500 words). In this section you will frame your research topic. Youwill set out the main reasons why your chosen topic is worth researching and what youhope to achieve. How will your research focus make a contribution to the business context(for example a companys goals) and the existing literature? This should be followed by themain research question/project aim. This will be in the form of 3 or 4 SMART objectives tonarrow the focus. This should be followed by a brief description of what the upcomingchapters will be about and your research approach.Literature review (Chapter 2 1000-1500 words). You should critically review the literaturerelevant to the objectives of the project. This will involve a concern for both seminal andcontemporary literature with relevant debates covered and alternative perspectivesoutlined and critically discussed.Research Methods (Chapter 3 500-1000 words). Here you will discuss the researchmethod(s) used. This will involve a discussion of qualitative and/or quantitative researchmethods sampling reliability and validity approaches to analysis of data and limitations ofthe research method(s) used. Secondary research may be used (such as company reportscompany web sites and newspaper and journal articles). It is important that you commenton the validity and reliability of such data. It is also important that ethical issues inresearching and managing your project are considered particularly when you involveprimary research (such as interviews surveys and observations).The Business Professional4Findings and Analysis (Chapter 4 1500-2500 words). Here you will present your keyfindings. It is important that these are well substantiated and presented in a sensible orderand that key results or issues are clear. If your approach is qualitative it is important thatyou give relevant examples of your findings (for example through extracts from interviewsyou have conducted). If your approach is quantitative you may include graphs charts andtables to support your argument (each graph chart and table must be numbered and clearlytitled). When writing up you must synthesise the findings. This requires you to criticallyanalyse them with reference to the existing literature and in relation to your project aimand objectives. The key to achieving success is to ensure that you contextualise yourdiscussion with reference to the literature that supports your arguments.Conclusion (Chapter 5 500 words). The conclusion should be used to tie togetherintegrate and synthesize your findings and discussion in relation to the aim and objectives.This chapter will also include recommendations in terms of theoretical and/or practicalimplications based on your research findings.Bibliography / Reference list. Referenced publications are listed in the bibliographyalphabetically by authors surname using the Harvard System.Appendix (if applicable). Appendices could for example include interview transcripts surveyquestions and large diagrams figures and graphs.Reflection on Professional Employability SkillsWhile working on the project you will be required to reflect on your development inprofessional employability skills. Your skills as a business professional will improve throughdoing a management project but also through other experiences in other modules andactivities at UEL as well as external engagements such as part-time employment. In thisassessment there will be a particular focus on commercial awareness problem-solving andanalytical skills planning and organisational skills time management research andinformation literacy skills use of IT and academic writing skills.
