The twelve-year period from 1865-1877 known as Reconstruction was one of the most turbulent eras of American history. In this discussion, we will explore the meaning of Reconstruction and how the constitutional amendments, federal and state laws, policies, and on-the-ground practices that were enacted during those years affected whites, blacks, women in both the North and the South. For this discussion here is what I’d like you to do:
- Read through chapter 15 of The American Yawp collective history text, paying particular attention to its discussion of the ascendancy of African Americans to political power and the resulting backlash from Southern whites. Also, pay attention to the impact of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution on women, both in the North and the South.
- After you have done the readings, create posts, 100-250 words in length that:
- Define Reconstruction in your own words.
- Identify two or more changes in law that resulted from Reconstruction.
- Evaluate what opportunities Reconstruction offered to African Americans and how they initially made use of those opportunities for class mobility.
- Describe and compare how and why southern whites, both rich and poor, reacted to the changes in their society as they did.
- Assess the role that women playing in contributing to the failure of Reconstruction policies.
