Several concepts and guidelines have been formulated to assist nurses in the research process. However, these concepts vary and have different applications within research (Varpio et al., 2020). For instance, conceptual models reflect a philosophical stance and provide an overview of a phenomenon of interest (Premkumar et al., 2017). These conceptual models are frequently comprised of constructs, which become the foundation of theories (Premkumar et al., 2017). Theories are a set of defined propositions that may be used to describe, speculate, or control (Premkumar et al., 2017). Researchers Varpio et al. (2020) add that theories are “an abstract description of the relationships between concepts that help us to understand the world” (p.990). Conceptual models and theories both act as a guideline to aid in designing and implementing a study; however, careful consideration must be utilized when choosing an appropriate conceptual model for a study (Premkumar et al., 2017). These frameworks may then assist the nurse in honing their research focus, crafting hypotheses, and examining measurable outcomes (Premkumar et al., 2017). Moreover, they may also help interpret vast quantities of collected data (Sovacool & Hess, 2017). By distinguishing between conceptual models and theories, the nurse researcher may be adequately prepared for research initiation and dissemination. In doing so, the quality of research may be maintained via the selective use of conceptual theory in the clinical setting.
