It is becoming increasingly apparent that hospital workers and services must comprehend the complexities of caring for and treating dementia patients. Initiatives to create age-friendly communities spawned the notion of dementia-friendly communities. It was initially used to define physical and social contexts that fostered inclusion, acceptance, and accessibility for individuals with dementia. It now encompasses efforts that help people with dementia’s independence and safety. Multiple variables influence the success of programs designed to help patients with dementia, including staff knowledge and abilities in dementia care, the care environment, and competing demands on staff time and attention (Handley et al., 2017). Therefore, educational approaches should emphasize how staff may connect with the experience of being a dementia patient and chances for staff to share their experiences dealing with problematic behaviours and incorporate person-centred practices into ward routines and priorities. To enhance patient care, dementia awareness campaigns in acute care settings are critical. These issues can be found in the National Institute of aging (“Alzheimer’s and related dementia resources for professionals,” n.d.).
Moreover, Canadian research on family members’ experiences caring for a person with dementia found a need for an integrated continuing care model that included the person with dementia and the caregiver as partners in care. The researchers found that providing appropriate and regular support services, such as personal care, food, housekeeping, and respite, significantly impacted the time that family caregivers could provide care in the family home(Weir, 2018).
Question Two
Antipsychotics for behavioural control, stigma and prejudice towards individuals living with dementia, and confusing, hazardous surroundings are all standard care methods harmful to persons living with dementia. As nurses, we must use education and training to reduce the stigma around dementia and raise dementia awareness among the healthcare staff in the dementia-friendly environment and home care. After navigating the websites and reading the paper mentioned above, I learned these issues.
