Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Project Proposal
According to Cleary-Holdforth et al. (2021), evidence-based practice (EBP) is a way in which healthcare professionals and organizations approach clinical problems and drive clinical practice and research. A staple and first step in EBP, the PICO acronym provides the foundation for a “good†clinical question for the researcher (Schiavenato & Chu, 2021). This acronym stands for patient or population, intervention or issue of interest, comparator intervention or group, and outcome (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). When formulated correctly, the PICO acronym will allow the researcher to “deconstruct the problem into searchable elements†in order to yield the most relevant and best information available (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019; Stannard, 2019, p. 1081).
PICO Clinical Question
Using the PICO format to drive inquiry for my DNP project, my clinical question asks: In currently employed advanced practice providers (P), how does the use of stress reducing techniques (I) compared to not using any techniques (C) affect their risk for compassion fatigue in an oncology setting (O)?
Problem Statement
Providing high-quality care to patients with complex medical conditions, such as cancer, can be a rewarding profession and derive an immense level of satisfaction. However, recent studies have indicated that oncology professionals are exposed to a greater level of occupational stress in comparison to health care professionals in other specialties (Gribben & Semple, 2021). Consequently, this prolonged exposure to occupational stress can have a significant impact on the providers. Factors such as decreased job satisfaction and job performance, physiological and psychological symptoms, and self-care neglect can easily attribute to the mental deterioration and exhaustion associated with compassion fatigue amongst oncology providers (Gribben & Semple, 2021; Geese et al., 2022).
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this study is to identify and describe the prevalence of compassion fatigue and explore effective ways to combat its occurrence in advanced practice providers in an oncology setting.
