The decades that followed World War II and the United States’ emergence as a world superpower were marked with much internal contradiction, as our readings, our contributions to the Re-Thinking U.S. History Timeline, and discussions in the module forum and Personalizing HIstory Project have shown. For this assignment pick a theme from 1945-1992 that has captured your interest and tell its story through analysis, Zine style.
Please create one page for each of the eight Zine elements as listed in the M4 Study guide: Zine Guidelines. Assessment of this activity will be based on successful completion and experimentation; in other words, you do not need to display a high level of talent with the creative arts to succeed in this project. A few suggestions for putting the Zine together:
- Choose a title that captures one theme succinctly. You may illustrate that title with a visual image found via Google or some other source.
- Keep the written story short and sparse, because you will have opportunities to tell the story in other ways.
- Look through old magazines, newspapers, or other printed media for things to include for the following pages of the Zine: cartoon, collage, front page and back page. These clips can be photocopied and/or scanned for inclusion in the Zine. (Have fun, you can literally cut and paste onto a sheet of paper if you so desire.)
- Have fun with this activity. Some of you may have been children, teenagers, or young adults during this time period and may have memories. Others of you may not have had that experience but may know of others who have. Use this project as an opportunity to explore what the era that has preceded our current generation means for you. What is its legacy from your perspective?
To prepare your Zine, please do the following:
- Review the M4 Study Guide: Zine Guidelines and Wright, The History and Characteristics of Zines, Part I.
- Follow the Zine Guidelines to prepare your Zine, basing it on one of the activities you completed in the M4 Personalizing History Project or on a combination of the two.
- Please upload your zine as either a Microsoft Word Document, a PDF, or JPG when you have completed it.
