Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by making recommendations for how they might strengthen the leadership behaviors profiled in their StrengthsFinder assessment, or by commenting on lessons to be learned from the results that can be applied to personal leadership philosophies and behaviors.
Self-assessment tools help provide individuals with feedback on their strengths and qualities that assist them in being successful (Broome & Marshall, 2020). Additionally, self-assessment tools can help individuals grow in areas where they are weak. The top five themes yielded from my StrengthsFinder assessment were developer, achiever, discipline, positivity, and individualization. I must admit that I was not surprised by my assessment results. Throughout my life, these themes or adjectives have been used repeatedly to describe my personality, not only professionally but also in my personal life.
Core Values, Strengths, and Characteristics I Would Like to Strengthen
I want to build upon two core values: autonomy and altruism. Autonomy in nursing can be defined as having the ability to think critically and take the appropriate actions concerning your patient’s care (Nightingale College, 2021). Even though I have been a nurse for over four years now, I still consider myself green in many aspects. Therefore, there are times when I question my knowledge or training when trying to do the right thing for my patients. I am working very hard on trusting my instincts and improving my confidence in my abilities.
Additionally, it is essential to encourage your patients to have autonomy over the decisions about the care and treatment they receive. Altruism in nursing ensures that you provide care and support to patients and collogues without expecting anything in return. I honestly think I do an excellent job in this area, but there is always room for improvement.
Discipline and developer are two strengths that I would like to continue to build upon. Individuals who have strong discipline “enjoy routine and structure. Their world is best described by the order they create†(Gallup & Inc., n.d.). I like to stick to a very structured routine and schedule; however, if I am not in the best mood, it affects how disciplined I can be. Therefore, I want to learn how to remain disciplined in my work when things don’t seem to go as planned. A person who embodies the strength of a developer can “recognize and cultivate the potential in others. They spot the signs of each small improvement and derive satisfaction from these improvements†(Gallup & Inc., n.d.). I have always been good at recognizing the abilities and strengths of others and motivating them to build upon those strengths. However, I struggle to acknowledge my potential and strengths. As a leader, I believe it is crucial to apply the same principles of recognition and progress that you instill into your employees in yourself.
Two characteristics that I would like to strengthen, are communication and positivity. “Communication is central to successful caring relationships and to effective team working†(Bramhall, 2014). I am not the best communicator when I am frustrated or stressed. As a nurse, we often work in highly stressful environments, and it is essential to communicate effectively for the well-being of the patients and your colleagues. People who embody the theme of positivity have a contagious enthusiasm and can motivate others to achieve tasks (Gallup & Inc., n.d.). While this is my strength, I have noticed that as nursing shifted because of the pandemic, I do not see myself as possessing as much positivity as I have before. I think it is vital to remain positive in the face of adversity, as it is an excellent, motivating factor in getting tasks accomplished.
