This discussion considers the value of Public Reporting as a strategy to address health quality, costs, and consumer decision making about the providers chosen to deliver care. During the discussion for this module consider the following points/questions:
- Do you think that public reporting does guide consumer decision making? If so, how specifically?
- Do you think that public reporting guides employers and other purchasers when selecting health insurance plans?
- How does it guide policymakers in assessing system performance and value? Give specific examples.
- What barriers may be present to its effectiveness in all arenas (quality, costs and choice)?
- Are there any unintended consequences associated with Public Reporting?
- What could be put into place to address these and to potentially improve the effectiveness of this tool?
- What impact, if any, does Public Reporting have for vulnerable populations?
