Discussion: Article Analysis

Teodorczuk, K., Guse, T., & Du Plessis, G. A. (2018). The effect of positive psychology interventions on hope and well-being of adolescents living in a child and youth care center. British Journal of Guidance & Counselling47(2), 234-245.

The study establishes positive psychology intervention on adolescents’ hope and well-being staying in child and youth care center (CYCC) in South Africa. The research used a research methodology in which data was collected from the randomized sample of adolescent youth in CYCC. The study considered factors focused on the optimal youth development that differentiate between protective factors and individual levels and at a social-contextual level that include family and community attributes.  The research participants were grouped into experimental and controls groups. From the study results, there were no statistically significant differences in well-being and hope between the two groups. A sample size of 12 participants was used, which is not appropriate for achieving significant results; thus, the study used additional moderating factors to enhance the results’ understandability.  The results were only limited to the adolescent from the CYCC and the study questions used.  Due to the unclear results, the finding cannot be generalized to the entire population.

Article critique

The study implements an experimental research design, where a group of participants participated in a control group. The other group, the experimental group, was engaged in one-hour intervention sessions for six weeks. The result obtained from this group was compared with the results of the control group. The study used independent and paired-sample t-test because the two groups used were their t-test were compared and inferences drawn from them. This t-test was the most appropriate choice because the study was based on establishing whether positive psychological intervention contributed to adolescent youth’s well-being; therefore, the study compared the statical inferential results obtained from the two data sets t-tests selected do best.

The author displays the statical results only. However, the raw data was not displayed from the actual experiment conducted.  The result displayed were both for the experimental results and the control experiment.  It is essential to display all data from an experiment and show how you arrive at the final statistical results that lead to the study’s inference(Wagner, 2020). The author mentioned different factors consider for optimal youth development. These factors need to have their displayed and analyzed separately.

The study results are standalone; the entire results obtained from the stud came from the primary analyses of the raw statistical result.  There were no external findings that these results were based on.  However, this study was an advancement of other researches that had been conducted earlier.

The authors finding were not meaningful considering the sample size used in the stud was not that significant.  The meaningful result could have been achieved if the author had a large sample size (Frankfort-Nachmias, Leon-Guerrero, & Davis, 2020)
that could have resulted in a meaningful result that could be applied.  The author did not find a significant difference between the two groups because of the small sample size.
