ASSIGNMENT 4 Debatable Issues Infographic

ASSIGNMENT 4 Debatable Issues Infographic

The purpose of this assignment is for you to learn more about a debatable issue related to infant development, and to demonstrate your learning by creating an infographic.

STEP 1

Select an interesting, debatable issue from this module that you would like to learn more about.  Conduct an Internet search to find sources with information on the issue.  Seek out authoritative sources that present scientific information (i.e., findings from empirical studies).  These can be primary source journal articles, but can also be secondary source media reports, or articles from national organizations that focus on child development (American Academy of Pediatrics, UNICEF, etc.).

Here are some issues that you could select: how long to breastfeed infants, social requirements on vaccination, whether or not to circumcise baby boys, whether or not to co-sleep with infants, whether to nurture babies in accordance with traditional gender roles or to practice gender-neutral parenting.  You can select any of these, are choose another issue of interest to you.

STEP 2

Select some relevant and significant information from your research.  This can include short factual statements, graphs, charts, tables, etc.  Your objective is to create an interesting visual (that is, an “infographic”) so that an outside observer could quickly learn at least three new things about the issue by looking at it. Your infographic should include at least two images (pictures, charts, and graphs all count as images) and some text. You can present both sides of the “debate” on your infographic (for example, the pros and cons of circumcision), or you can focus on one side (if your goal is to persuade your audience to adopt your position on the issue).

I encourage you to create your own images or to use images with a Creative Commons license (free to use).  With that said, it is OK for the purposes of this assignment to use a copyrighted image, since your assignment will not be presented publicly.  For all images that you don’t create yourself, make sure to include a citation.  There are existing infographics on most any issue that you can find by doing a Google image search.  I encourage you to do this to view some examples.  However, do not use an existing infographic or even part of one for this assignment.  Create your own infographic using images from the sources you found, or ones you’ve created yourself, and carefully formatted textual statements that are clear and concise.

Please don’t feel overwhelmed by creating a visual. You can think of it as making a simplified “poster” about the topic. You can design the poster in any medium you like, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Photoshop, etc.  When I have made posters in the recent past for conferences, I used PowerPoint.  You use one slide and set the dimensions for whatever you need.  Then you insert text boxes and image files, and can move them around anywhere on the slide.  Also, if you want to explore other programs (which have free trials or free accounts), here are some options: Canva, Infogram, and Easel.ly.  I haven’t used these myself, but you can check them out if you are interested.

STEP 3

Submit your infographic along with a 2-page reflection paper that addresses the following questions.

What specific information (i.e., findings/conclusions from scientific research) did you learn that relates to the issue?

What information do you find to be most important or significant, and why?  How do your own values relate to how you view the issue and which position you side with?

What experiences have you had, or what observations have you made of others, that relate to this issue?  How do these experiences factor into how you view the issue?
