DISCUSSION 4 Infant Cosleeping
The purpose of this discussion is for you to think critically about the issue of cosleeping with an infant.
Cosleeping is practice where parents sleep in proximity with their baby, whether in the same bed or the same room. For clarity, researchers sometimes distinguish between “bed-sharing,†where the baby sleeps in the parents’ bed, and “cosleeping,†where the baby is in the same room as the parents but in a separate sleeping unit, whether a crib or bed-side bassinet. In addition, for bed-sharing, there are specially designed sleeping mattresses for infants that could be placed in the parents’ bed.
The practice of bed-sharing is controversial because of the increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome and accidental injury of the infant. Those who practice it report ease of breast-feeding and better bonding with their baby. The practice of cosleeping can be controversial as well, with arguments both on the pro and con sides.
