Parents parent in different ways. Developmental psychologists are interested in describing the different ways that parents’ parent (i.e., parenting styles) and then predicting which styles are associated with both positive and negative outcomes later in life. Diana Baumrind conducted classic research on this issue, and characterized four parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive-neglectful, and permissive-indulgent. You will learn about this conceptualization in your course textbook, in addition to more recent models of parenting styles.
The purpose of this discussion is for you to think critically about different styles of parenting and their impact on child development.
Before beginning the discussion, read the following section in your textbook: Early Childhood / Emotional and Social Development in Early Childhood / 5. Family Life and Parenting Styles.
Then read the article below to learn more about psychological research on parenting styles. I especially recommend reading the section titled “Cultural Differences.â€

Apply specific ideas or information from the sources provided in these instructions or other authoritative online sources that you found. First quote the relevant passages from your source and provide an in-text citation. Then paraphrase the ideas (put them in your own words) and discuss how the ideas relate to the issue. REPLIES
Read your classmates’ posts and select two Initial Posts to respond to. Select posts that present ideas and experiences that are different from your own, since this provides the greatest opportunity for you to develop your own thinking. In your replies, include the following:
- a quote of the specific statement you are responding to
- a paraphrasing of the statement to communicate to your classmate how you interpreted it
- an explanation of how your thinking on the issue is different from your classmate’s thinking
- a question that asks your classmate to elaborate upon some aspect of their thinking
Each reply should be at least 200 words in length. When asking your question, consider what aspect of thinking your question is targeting. Your question could be about any of the following standards:
Clarity: You found some wording unclear and would like your classmate to rephrase it.
Accuracy: You are unsure if something stated is true and would like to see some supporting evidence.
Precision: You found a statement to be too general and vague and would some more specifics.
Logic: You don’t understand how some statements fit together. They seem to be contradictory, and you would like that explained.
Depth: You found the response to be too simple. You think your classmate left out some important facts or information that needs to be considered.
Breadth: You think the response is “narrow-minded” in the sense that other people might see it differently. You would like your classmate to think about it from another point of view.
Fairness: You found some statements to be judgmental. Maybe this wasn’t intended, but it came across that way to you. You are asking your classmate to reflect upon whether they have a bias or negative attitude about the issue.
Relevance: You found some information shared not to be relevant to the issue or question, or you think some relevant information is being left out of the response.
Significance: You think your classmate is making “too big of a deal” of something or is minimizing something. You think something is more important or less important than how they are presenting it.
When asking your question, identify the specific standard or standards that you are targeting. Put it in a bold font, so it stands out in your post. This makes your critical thinking “explicit” (that is, out in the open), which is a good way to develop thinking.
