Initial Post Instructions
Sociologist C. Wright Mills preferred to call the sociological perspective the sociological imagination, and he saw it transforming personal troubles into public issues. Let us begin our discussion this week by considering suicide, which is thoroughly explored in your textbook reading for this week.
For the initial post, respond to one of the following options, and label the beginning of your post indicating either Option 1 or Option 2:
- Option 1: Do a little digging: What resources are there in your state or local community for suicide prevention? Are the resources adequate, in your view? Why or why not? How does the sociological imagination help you decide whether or not the resources are adequate?
- Option 2: Is this a “downer” topic to start a course or a textbook? If so, how would you explain the sociological imagination to a friend, in a different way? If not, why is this an important topic to help you learn about the sociological imagination?
Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least one peer. If possible, respond to one peer who chose an option different than the one you chose. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification. Make sure that you add additional information and not repeat the same information already posted on the discussion board as you further the dialogue.

Hello Professor and Class,
Option 1
Long island, New York where I’m from is spilt into two counties Nassau and Suffolk. I was intrigued to see if there were resources for each county separately. After some digging, I came across the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Long Island (SPCLI) which serves both counties. This coalition prides itself by finding dedicated individuals who will work to save lives within their community through suicide prevention training, education, and information resources (SPCLI, n.d.). On their website they provide a couple confidential suicide hotlines including a local and national hotline, a list of warning signs for anyone who might know someone who’s struggling and an array of online resources. Providing local hotlines are somewhat adequate since these crisis centers may be able to get these individuals the resources and help that they need within their state/county, but not everyone has access to a phone. There needs to be an actual crisis center that someone could walk into and inquire around about getting the help that they need. Not everyone may feel comfortable asking for help on the phone or in person so having both options would be great.
Using sociological imagination, I believe just having one hotline for both counties it isn’t adequate since there are millions of people that live on Long Island. There should be more crisis centers within each community to combat any metal health issues going on within the community and educational resources for individuals to look out for signs/resources to help someone they know/love.
