Activity Description

Write Purpose of the Study for the Prospectus: The Research Prospectus is an overview of your Doctoral Project, giving the reader sufficient information about the work you are proposing, the societal problem you are investigating, and about the way you plan your research. Provides insights and perspectives for why the study should be conducted. 

The purpose of the study must be in direct alignment with the problem and establishes how the study will be conducted. This section is a discussion of how key elements of the study will be explored by identifying the methodology and research questions. The first sentence of the section should clearly the purpose of the study including the method that will be used for the study. As you develop the section you can insert information specific to the methodology in a sentence or two such as specific type of study method and estimated number of participants. Provide adequate context to support the research questions. The questions for research are posed using the format of a short question that reflects the focus of the study.  Generally, a study consists of 3-5 research questions. Please refer to the Doctoral Project Manual. Length 1-2 paragraphs.  

MYWORK:  

I am doing a qualitative research paper regarding domestic violence and native Hawaiians on Molokai. The goal is to learn ways in which decrease domestic violence for native Hawaiians on Molokai. 

Is it cultural interventions that assist with real change? 

What are the cultural factors that cause violence. 

My research:  I will interview clients who volunteered or were mandated at Molokai Alternatives to Violence to see if they have changed…and what made them change if they did…

Cultural interventions include:

Connecting an individual with their aina…their land

Ho’opono:  admitting all wrongs and forgiving to move forward

Kuka Kuka:  relaxed setting to converse

Talk Story:  talking

Connecting with family

Respect of elders

The purpose of this study is to identify therapeutic interventions for Native Hawaiians, which 
encourage real behavioral change for a safe environment for everyone involved. 
Research Questions
Qualitative:
RQ1. Which therapeutic interventions aid in healing for Native Hawaiian perpetrators of 
domestic violence? 
RQ2. Which therapeutic interventions foster or increase regulation of emotions for Native 
Hawaiian perpetrators of domestic violence? 
Hypotheses
H1 There is a relationship between culture and the healing process for curbing or ending 
violence. 
H2 â€œAina” based or cultural based methods will decrease the likelihood of violence. 
To answer these questions, interviews will be conducted with participants of Molokai 
Alternatives to Violence, a non-profit which provides a batterers intervention program. The 
participants for this study have been mandated by the courts due to a violent incident, or can be 
participants who volunteer for the program.  The participants have all completed the 24-week 
program and received a certificate of completion. The population of this study consisted of 
approximately 60 participants, using random sampling. The outcomes of therapeutic interventions will be gathered based on the interviews with the participants of Molokai Alternatives to Violence and the facilitators of the program. The qualitative part of this research 
came from the interviews with the perpetrators of domestic violence.

1. For qualitative research questions, I recommend reviewing the Creswell chapter from the research methods course; he offers helpful scripts for writing research questions based on the specific type of qualitative design that will be used.

1. Hypotheses are reserved for quantitative research. If you propose a qualitative study, you can eliminate these hypotheses. I am doing qualitative…so this can be eliminated
