Use the textbook and web-based primary sources to provide responses to the questions below. Each of the questions should require a couple of sentences to a paragraph, and the entire essay should be about two typed pages (double spaced, using standard margins, 12-point Times new Roman font, approximately 300 words). You do not need to cite the textbook or the primary source formally; you can simply say, for example: Bachman says…. (Bachman, p. 68) to show where you are referring to. Be sure to answer the questions in your own words.
Please discuss the basic principles of Enlightenment philosophy:
- What were the basic principles of the Enlightenment?
- Above all else, what did Enlightenment thinkers believe about human beings and human nature in their societies and other societies in the world?
- What factors have the greatest influence on human behavior (i.e. how did people become the people they are?) (See Locke’s An Essay on Humane Understanding, Book II, “Of Ideas,” Chapter 1, Sections 1-6)
- What did Rousseau mean by the “Social Contract†and the idea of the “general will”? (See Rousseau’s The Social Contract)
