Week 4 Assignment: Case Study: Language Development

Overview

During Week 3, you interviewed a reading specialist to gain insight into what they do and how they use what they know about reading to best support various students’ needs. This week, you will develop and write a 2–4 page case study report on a child 0–2 years of age to examine and assess language development milestones. Preferably, this child will be an ELL, a child with low socioeconomic status, or a child with a special need. You will interview a parent or guardian to obtain family background information and language and literacy practices at home. You will also interview a teacher for the child’s language development in the early learning environment. List what is in the center/school that will help children develop oral language and what they need to add.

Then, you will engage in a planned activity with the child that reflects a specific age-appropriate language development milestone. Assess the activity using a checklist. Outline the stage of language development the child is in. Align your assessment with language development theory. Finally, you will recommend strategies for both the teacher and the parent/guardian that will support the child’s language development.

Instructions

Using the Language and Development Case Study Template (0–2 Years) [DOCX] , complete the following:

    • Describe how this activity addresses the child’s specific needs.
  3. Recommend strategies for next steps and adaptations for the teacher to implement:

    • Include strategies they can be used to support the child’s language development.
    • Include this as an appendix to your report.
  5. Connections.
    • Based on your results, how are your findings connected to the alternative age range. (For example, if you focused on a 3–5 year old, how are your findings connected to milestones within the 0–2 year checklist.)
      • If you completed the 0–2 year checklist, how can your findings impact your student’s phonics skills when he or she reaches the 3–5 year range? Why? Support this idea highlighting the specific connections between phonological awareness and phonics.
      • If you completed the 3–5 year checklist, what milestones may your student need additional support in from the 0–2 year range? Why? Support this idea highlighting key components of language development in the 0–2 year range.
  6. Reflect on your experience with this process, including areas of success and areas of growth and connections:
    • Include what went well and what you would do differently.
