In this team discussion, you will strengthen your citation skills by thinking about the difference between information that must be cited and “common knowledge†that does not require a citation.
Pick a topic that you already know a great deal about. For that topic, identify two pieces of information that you would consider common knowledge and one piece of information that you believe would need a citation. (You may need to do some basic, preliminary research to find this.) In an initial post, share these pieces of information with your team. Be sure to clearly label them as “common knowledge†or “not common knowledge.†Then, in 1-2 sentences, explain why you labeled each piece of information as you did. Remember: when citing sources, “common knowledge†doesn’t mean quite the same thing it means in everyday life. Be sure to review the module notes on “common knowledge†before making your selections.
