Chapter 4 Discussion
Note: the union and intersection symbols do not copy well into your discussion so use the formatting bar above the discussion box, click on the “square root of x†symbol, click on ‘operators’, and the symbols are there to insert…OR…use the words “OR†and “AND†to indicate the proper symbol. Rule of rounding in the textbook indicate probability is rounded to 3 significant digits so be sure to round appropriately.
1. Use a package of M & M’s or skittles or something that has several items in several different colors and list the colors and the frequency of each color. Explain what you used for the data and include the sample size n = total number of items in the sample.
2. Using that list of colors find the probability of the union of two sets if one item is picked from the entire sample (include the probability statement using correct probability notation). Include the work used to find the probability (show the steps).
Example: P(blue ∪ yellow) =
3. Using that list of colors find the probability of the intersection of two sets if one item is picked from the entire sample (include the probability statement using correct probability notation). Include any work needed to find the probability (show the steps).
Example: P(blue ∩ yellow) =
4. Using that list of colors find the probability for picking 3 items of the same color without replacement (include the probability statement using correct probability notation). Include the work used to find the probability (show the steps).
Example: P(choose 3 blue) =
