Students will be required to structure a new experience solely for the purpose of this course (previous experiences or experiences from other classes will NOT be permitted.) In this experience, each student will need to meet with an individual or individuals who are from another background, and who may be affected by the oppression and discrimination that occurs within our society.
For this paper, each student should interview someone who is different from the student by race and at least one other dimension of intersectionality: ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability and ability, class, immigration status, or religion. The individual must be someone who is not related to the student whom the student does not already know well. In order to protect confidentiality, a pseudonym should be used for the interviewee.
When possible, the interview should be completed in person. Students are allowed to complete the interview through video conferencing (such as Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, etc.) if necessary and approved in advance. However, the interview needs to be “face-to-face;†telephone interviews or interviews conducted through email are not acceptable for the assignment.
The student will also conduct a literature review related to the interview. Once the interview and literature review are completed, students will write a 6-8 page paper in which they review the empirical literature on the population they selected, describe their interview experience, and discuss how their experience was congruent or incongruent with their research. Students will then conclude with a section dedicated to discussion of the relevance of this exercise to their personal and professional development and how they will generalize this experience to practice. The paper must be completed in APA format (double spaced, 1-inch margins,12-point Times New Roman font). Title page and references are required and are not included in the required page count. References must be cited using APA style in the text of the paper and on the references page. References must include 3-5 scholarly, peer-reviewed articles from social work or other social science journals published within the past 5 years, (an exception may be made to include a relevant older article if approval is requested in advance).
We know that exposure to diversity often leads to less negative attitudes toward people who are “different†than we are, and increases our own understanding and personal growth. This assignment is an opportunity for each student to step outside of their comfort zone and attempt to understand the world from someone else’s perspective.
