Impacts Of Brands On Public Opinion And Public Behaviour
[ad_1]
Core Task:
Choose ONE brand (a business as opposed to a service) and conduct a case study into their digital communications. The brand has to be established enough to have a social media following of at least 1 million globally. The brand has to have been in operation for the past 5 years and be regularly active on social media. In your case study you will need to include the following sections and use the digital media theories that we have looked at on the course to support your views and conclusions.
Introduction: Brief introduction to the brand and an overview of their digital presence, how many followers do they have on various platforms, their biggest campaigns or stand out communications.
Brand aims: Through close analysis of the brand’s online presence and interaction with their audience/ customers what do you think their aims are? What kind of presence online do they wish to create? Do they want to be accessible or exclusive, do they personalise their digital communications with their customers and do they actively encourage interaction? If so how?
Digital strategy: How has your brand created a digital presence? Is it primarily through their posts on their social media, or is through online advertising, through influencer marketing, or have they created content which is shareable and that gains traction online? It may be a combination of all of these but analyse exactly how they have created their digital presence.
Audience engagement: Analyse their audience engagement. To what extent do the audience engage with their digital offerings, are they shared/retweeted/reposted, replied to etc Is the audience response positive or do they get negative feedback as well? What trends can you notice with regards to their digital communications?
Impact and Influence: How do they influence others and what impact are they having on public opinion and public behaviour? For example, if you look at Dove’s ‘Campaign for Real Beauty’ they have tried to encourage natural beauty and for women to embrace themselves as they are, whilst still selling products. Or if you consider Nike’s ‘Nothing Beats a Londoner’ campaign, this encouraged diversity and people from all backgrounds to embrace sport.
Emerging technologies: Is your brand utilising the latest technologies and staying at the fore front of innovation when it comes to having a digital presence? How?
Conclusions and recommendations: Overall how successful would you say your brand is digitally and how are you measuring their online success? Do you have any suggestions for how they could improve their digital presence and create deeper connections with their audience?
Structure:
- The case study structure should be in the format of a report with a title, headings and sub-headings, these will depend on your choice of brand/text to analyse. You will need to include any adverts, images, social media posts, media texts as appendices in addition to a bibliography of your research at the end.
Theory and/or task resources required for the assessment:
- Application of relevant theories must be used to support and develop your argument (it is recommended that you use 8-10 sources).
- The use of industry websites such as Ofcom.com in order to obtain current information regarding the communications industry in the UK is also highly recommended. This may also include industry journals and news articles in order to obtain the information you require on your chosen topic. mySearch (http://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/library/resources/search-resources.html) could be a very useful tool in your research.
Assessment reference style:
Accurate Harvard-style referencing is essential if you wish to get a high score
If referring to news items:
- Use broadsheet sources – e.g. The Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, BBC, The Independent
- Avoid tabloid sources – e.g. The Star, The Sun, The Mirror, The Express, The Daily Mail
Write in paragraphs and make sure you provide in-text citations for all the sources you refer to in your essay and a reference list at the end of your assignment
Improper referencing could lead to an allegation of academic misconduct
Expected word count:
1500 words (+/- 10%) excluding references, bibliography and any appendices
The following learning outcomes are assessed in this task:
1. Identify and analyse the impact of digital communications from a socio-economic perspective
4. Analyse and describe trends in individual and group behaviour in digital environments
5. Analyse and explain the role and relevance of emerging technologies to the communications and media industries
