- You have agreed to curate a museum show entitled “Rethinking the Manson Murders.” Your task is to select 7-10 items that will make up the exhibit and to write an introductory essay. As for the items you select: these can be primary or secondary sources, including objects, incidents, moments, music, whatever. Please note, however, that your primary task is to demonstrate how the past 50 years have shaped and/or changed our understanding of the Manson case. It will help your essay if you approach it with an eye towards methodology. Feel free to get creative with the exhibit’s design and to explore how that design relates to your historical narrative.
- You have agreed to create a website devoted to the cultural geography of the Manson murders. Give your website a name and select 7-10 topics that will illuminate your argument about the ways in which the case is intertwined with (aspects of) California’s environment, both material and cultural. You might consider: landscape, tourism, film, music, art, fiction, etc.
- At the beginning of the semester, we considered Banksy’s “Hitchhiker to Anywhere” as a metaphor for the way Manson has made his way through American culture. (Jeffrey Melnick is getting at something similar when he argues that the Manson case has “creepy crawled” its way through American culture.) But how have different cultural forms (websites, interviews, true crime books, novels, films, music, comics, etc.) treated the Manson Murders as history? How do they historicize the case? What do they seek to reveal of its history? Is there something specific about the Manson case that these forms can get at (perhaps something that more “traditional” forms cannot)?
- Should the Manson murders be considered a political case? Why or why not? You might consider ideology, memory, law, race, gender, class, etc. You may, but you do not have to limit yourself to events of 1969-1971, i.e., to the restricted history of the murders and the trial. In other words, it could also be more appropriate to explore what, over the course of fifty years, the Manson case reveals about the politics of the legal system or about gender in American culture. Please note: for this prompt, do not write on a topic on which you have written previously. So, if you’ve already written on gender and sexuality, then choose a different focus for this essay.
