What is field research proposal?
The field research proposal is a learning opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of intercultural communication and intercultural relations issues in a variety of settings with a focus on the business environment.
The field research proposal is a step-by-step plan for how a research on a topic will be conducted. It is a description of the topic, hypothesis, thesis statement or research questions, research methods and a justification/discussion of the issues, challenges, opportunities around the chosen topic through a literature review/ annotated bibliography. Note that, a proposal is a plan for research should it be carried out. So it lays out the clearly the steps for research to be conducted around a topic.
Possible topics
The field research proposal will explore and examine relevant issues in any of the following areas. The topics below are suggestive and students are free to choose a topic that interests them as long as it is relevant to intercultural communication.
- Intercultural communication and relationships among workers from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Intercultural communication and relationship between supervisor and subordinate of different cultures
- Experiences of organizations who have adopted or integrated diversity
- Working internationally
- Intercultural negotiations
- Experiences of visible minorities in the Canadian business sector
- Developing cultural intelligence and intercultural sensitivity
- Self-Reflection of your own experience of diversity and intercultural learning
- The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (experience, challenges, critique, improvements etc.) or other governments sponsored programs related to Diversity, Job Equity, or Immigration-related job issues.
What is the format of the field research proposal?
The paper should be thoroughly researched and thought through. The paper should clearly spell the topic, hypothesis/research question, methods and a literature review discussing issues, challenges and opportunities around the topic based on annotations of 3 scholarly journal articles.
The paper should be 1500 words (excluding references),12 point font, double spaced, proofread, and original. The paper should include a cover page with the title and the name of the student. Use APA Style (American Psychological Association) for your citations and references. Please consult the Library if you need help with citations and references.
There will be no extensions to the deadline. See policy on late submissions in course outline.
Getting started
- Choose an area of interest from the list above; if you have another topic you want to pursue outside of that list, please consult the instructor.
- Once you have chosen your area of interest, review the literature to find published information and narrow your topic.
- Develop a thesis statement or research question that you want to address within your chosen topic.
- Choose an appropriate method for collecting data on your hypothesis. Your methods should also include a description of your population (the subjects of your intended study).
- Now create a literature review based on 3 scholarly articles (much like an annotated bibliography from ORGA201) around your topic.
- Write conclusion that includes limitations of your research proposal, ideas for future work.
Grading
The field research paper is 25% your grade for the course. The following criteria will be used for evaluating the field research paper.
- Content (40) points
The field research paper should include the following: (See scores for each of the following):
- Include a clear introductory paragraph explaining the topic to be discussed 5 points
- Provide/Restate your research question/hypothesis in a separate section. 5 points
- Use scholarly literature to justify the topic. 5 points
- Describes methods (interview or survey, population of study, sample) used to answer the research question.. 5 points
- Clearly identifies main ideas from scholarly literature to justify your topic. Use class concepts and theories clearly to discuss findings in context of intercultural communication. 15 points
- Provides a clear conclusion that offers insights/ creative ideas or lessons learnt from the situation described and limitations as gleaned from your research of scholarly work 5 points
- Organization (10 points)
- Overall organization (2%):
The paper follows formatting instructions, title page, header, page numbers, paragraph alignment and spacing.
- Logical organization of ideas (2%)
There is a coherent and consistent flow of ideas within each section and from one section to another.
- Clear elements (2%)
There is a structure and format in the paper – an introduction, which includes a clear thesis statement, a body, which identifies key points and provides facts and details, and a conclusion which summarizes the ideas presented in the report.
- Elements of effective writing (2%)
The paper demonstrates effective writing practice such as correct spelling, grammar, word usage, punctuation and expression.
- References (2%)
The reports demonstrates efforts at citing or referencing three or more credible sources within the text, includes accurate citation formatting, and a correctly presented and formatted (as per APA guidelines) reference page.
