For the first essay of the semester, choose one of the literary works that has been assigned in this course thus far, up to and including The Thousand and One Nights (including On the Nature of Things, Egyptian Love Poems, The Odyssey, Aesop’s Fables, Sappho, “Ars Poetica,” The Bhagavad-Gītā, The Jātaka, Classical Chinese Poetry, Confucius’s writings, The Scholar’s Guide, Marie de France’s Lais, Rumi’s works, or The Thousand and One Nights.  If you choose poems, you must write about the assigned collection; if you choose a work assigned as an excerpt, you must read more of the text (if not all of it) to write your paper.

Closely examine the assigned literary work(s) and research a topic of interest–narrow your focus, analyze, and interpret.  You do not need to prove anything in this research paper, as literary studies are subjective and can be interpreted from multiple perspectives, but choose a point of view/perspective about the text and the significance of your reading and argue strongly.

Create an argument that aims to convince your chosen audience to see the validity of your perspective and reading of the text.

Use both textual evidence (i.e. from the literary work itself) and academic research to support your claims (you may quote and/or paraphrase, but cite carefully in all cases).

You must use college-level sources and cite at least two to three academic texts such as academic journals (scholarly/peer-reviewed) and books (e.g. those written by scholars/professors and published by university presses).  This is the minimum number of sources, and they are in addition to the literary work itself (the primary source).  If you need help finding academic sources, visit the library, use the library’s databases via CougarWeb (JSTOR is suggested), and ask a librarian for research assistance should you encounter difficulties obtaining appropriate sources.

Sources must be properly evaluated and appropriate to the specifics of your analytical thesis—in other words, do not choose a source simply because it deals with the selected text; instead, be sure the source supports your paper’s assertions and claims.  Hint:  If you cannot find enough research, search again, ask for help, and/or expand your search. 

Remember that in an essay to convince, you must use logic, reason, and supporting evidence to present a clear argument to your audience.  Use a formal writing style with precise diction (word choice).

Write an argument with a thesis for which you feel the need to argue—not one that is obvious or factual.  Your thesis should be debatable! This means that someone should be able to form an anti-thesis to debate your argument and points—if everyone agrees with your thesis, or if your point is obvious, there is no need to argue.

A strong thesis must be clear, direct, specific, and it must incorporate the perspective and significance of your argument, or answer the “so what?”

Review important “Writing Documents” about crafting literary analyses & constructing thesis statements on Canvas. Pay careful attention to “Planning,” “Essay Structure Basics,” and “Body.”

The minimum page requirement for this paper is four full/complete pages, in addition to the MLA-formatted works cited page (not counted in page length).

As a shorter paper, it is important for you to focus your argument and purpose (even more so than in a longer paper where you have more time and space to develop your argument).

Choose your strongest, most demonstrative points and supporting evidence; remove any unnecessary information and/or “fluff” (review “Writing Rules,” etc. on Canvas).

Possible topics (you are not limited to these, but this list simply offers a few ideas):

  • Explore the symbolism in the Egyptian love poems. Research the history and context to better analyze the diction, imagery, and or allusions in the poems.  Pay attention to patterns and focus.
  • Analyze The Odyssey. Discuss the role of family, gender roles, the structure of the work (in medias res, the books, etc.), the title and concept of the journey, symbolism, etc.
  • Analyze the Sufi symbols, beliefs, and concepts in a few of Rumi’s poems to argue for a connection to the mystical dimension of Islam. Discuss the significance and role of these allusions.
  • Analyze the form and structure of The Thousand and One Nights and discuss the effects of the text’s narrative structure.
  • Analyze Shahrazad’s stories within The Thousand and One Nights and argue for the significance of her telling these particular tales to her husband to extend her life. In short, address the significance of the content and purpose of these specific tales.
  • Choose a text and explain its universality. (Be careful—analyze the text and its universal elements, but do not digress into a discussion of why the text matters today, etc.)
  • Study the social structure and hierarchy in one of the three main texts and argue for its effects.
  • Assert the importance of a text’s theme, social roles, societal values and/or beliefs, gender, symbols, allusions, imagery, or language in a text of your choice (choose one).

Remember:

  • Use literary present tense.
  • Use third person (no second person).
  • Remove contractions and any other informal writing elements—this is a formal, academic essay (review the “Writing Rules” document and other helpful files on Canvas prior to submission).
  • Argue strongly—be sure to make your point clear and develop it before offering evidence, both primary (literature) and secondary (academic research) for support.
  • Apply all formal conventions of edited Standard American English and use MLA format and documentation (8th edition). Remember that this is a formal textual analysis—edit, revise, then revise again, proofread, and read your paper aloud before submitting the essay.
