ASSIGNMENT 3: ORAL PRESENTATION (20%)
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to
demonstrate your skills in oral communication. Just as it is important that you write
clearly in the correct format, it is also essential that you demonstrate competent oral
presentation skills. The oral presentation provides recognition that the majority of
organisations seek graduates who have the ability to apply themselves to a task, to
identify and analyse relevant data, and present a coherent and professional
response.
Your presentation will be approx. 5-8 minutes long (the timing will alter slightly
depending on numbers in the class). We will confirm the actual time in class closer to
the due date for the assignment. The presentations will either take place in the
tutorials or in lecture time.
Task
Deliver a persuasive oral presentation that would be suitable in a professional
context in a New Zealand business. The presentation will give you the chance to
explore an issue of interest to you that relates to the future of business
communication. In recognition of the growing importance of communication of social
responsibility to business stakeholders the following 5 topics are available. Select
one of the following:
1. Gender balance in senior organisational roles
2. Child poverty
3. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and workplace surveillance
4. Environmental sustainability
5. Gender pay gap

In your presentation, you’ll need to explain persuasively why the topic will be
important to businesses, not-for-profit institutions or governments in future, and
how it will impact communication in those organisations or for their employees.
Remember how important it is to show connection with the audience, using nonverbal language. Dress in smart-casual corporate attire, displaying a professional
demeanour as you would in any business environment.
Jeans, t-shirts, hoodies or
other leisure attire is not acceptable.
Assignment 3 has three requirements.
Instructions
1. THE SPOKEN COMPONENT:
First, choose the issue you want to explore.
Second, think about how you’ll draw on data and other available information for your
presentation. (For example, if you choose an article about artificial intelligence (AI), you
will need to explain in your presentation why AI is important and how it will impact
communication in organisations for employees in the future). To give another example,
if you choose an article about sustainability, you’ll need to explain why that is important
and how it will impact communication in organisations for employees in the future.
Third, conduct some extra research about your chosen topic. Again, the topic you’ve
chosen is just your springboard; you need to do some extra reading about the topic.
Your extra research needs to include scholarly sources – like journal articles and book
chapters (use the library catalogue, Google Scholar, and Google Books). In this case it is
also necessary to refer to some non-scholarly sources, such as news media reports.
Fourth, develop your presentation. Draw on the readings, workshop and lecture notes
to develop your presentation successfully. How you choose to structure it is up to you,
as is the choice of persuasive techniques that you use. The visual techniques (such as
slides) that you choose to use are also up to you. As a baseline, you may wish to divide
your presentation into the following parts:

1. an introduction (that sets the scene and briefly lays out the key ideas or
arguments that will be made),
2. an outline (that provides details about the topic that has been chosen),
3. an explanation (that makes clear why the topic will be important to businesses,
not-for- profit institutions or governments in future),
4. a discussion (that details how the topic will impact communication in those
organisations for their employees in future),
5. a conclusion, and
6. a slide (or slides) with references.
2.
POWER POINT NOTES PAGES:
The second requirement is to submit (as scheduled in the course guide), a
complete set of Power Point notes pages prior to the oral presentation. When
planning your Power Point slides (and any other visual aids), remember, they
need to be:
appropriate
clear and with readable font size
visually interesting
concise and uncluttered
error free
of a simple, consistent design
contain full notes of your spoken presentation
3.
ACTIVE LISTENING AND PEER SUPPORT:
Your role as an engaged audience member in your peer group’s presentations. Just
as it is important to speak well, it is equally (sometimes more) important to listen
attentively. Remember, communication is a two-way process and an audience also
has an important role to play. You will be asked to review each presenter’s
performance on the day, and may be asked to think of relevant questions throughout
the presentations. Please be
courteous and attentive to your peers to minimise any
distractions for those who are presenting so that you can provide feedback that is
clearly focussed, objective, understandable and courteous.

P 4
REPARATION IS ESSENTIAL.
To ensure you present well, you need to know exactly what is required. The first
place to begin is to carefully read the assessment schedule and make a plan to meet
the designated criteria. Co-ordinate the sections of the presentation to demonstrate
that you are well-prepared. Ask for direction early if anything is unclear.
1. Please ensure you are well-organised and prepared on the day.
2. Arrive promptly on the day of the presentations.
3. Remember, you will be under intense time pressure, and need to be
exceptionally well organised. If you run late, you will be stopped at the
appropriate time and no further assessment will be continued.
When planning any presentation, the most enduring and important thing to
remember is:
