Paper 1: Gender Traps in Ibsen’s A Doll House

Assignment Overview

Daniel S. Burt tells us theatre critics often note “the precise moment when modern drama began: December 4, 1879, with the publication of Ibsen’s A Doll House, or, more dramatically at the explosive climax of the first performance in Copenhagen on December 21, 1879.” According to Burt, Ibsen’s play brought to fore the beginning of a “new dramatic era, theatrical era, legitimizing the exploration of key social problems as a serious concern for the modern theatre, while sounding the opening blast in the modern sexual revolution.”

Although we’ve read several stories for this unit, our first paper will focus on Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House. Our second paper will apply to the stories we read. Thus far, several class readings have explored the theme of entrapment. Whether trapped by gender roles, by social circumstance, or by their own limitations, characters are either able or unable to escape what seems their destinies. This paper asks that you select one character from Ibsen’s A Doll House and analyze:

1.) how traditional gender roles are represented and/or challenged in the play, especially through this character;
2.) how and in what way the character you select advocates or resists social change; and
3.) the play’s message and/or effect on the audience (what you regard as the purpose of
Ibsen’s play as well as the purpose of your paper given your thesis).

As you develop your analysis of Ibsen’s A Doll House in relation to the theme of entrapment, remember to consider the social context and time period of the play; however, toward the conclusion of your paper comment on how the play relates to a present issue today that informs the topic you discuss.

Paper Guidelines

For this assignment, state your thesis in one or two complete sentences at the end of your introduction; this will guide your interpretation as well as what textual evidence you chose. (Also identify the title and author of the play and the character you will focus on in your interpretation.) Remember body paragraphs rely on a topic sentence or key point that pulls together the textual details in the paragraph, so that each paragraph addresses, and develops the critical focus you present in your introduction. Pay attention to significant parts of the drama in order to support your larger argument about the play’s overall impact and theme. Select (and closely read) brief scenes or interactions from A Doll House that you find especially significant, whose details help explain a key point in support of your own thesis. For this paper, place the title of the play A Doll House in italics. Remember, however, to place “quotation marks” around the title of a critical article and use an author’s full name the first time you mention him or her, then his or her last name thereafter.

Your audience for this paper (hypothetically) will be college students as well as faculty. Prepare your written paper to be read or delivered at a small QCC conference.

Title your paper — an original title!

Documentation and Format

This paper requires the incorporation of two sources: 1.) Your primary source: Ibsen’s A Doll House; and 2.) A secondary source: an academic journal article on A Doll House from QCC databases such as Academic Search Complete, Bloom’s Literature, Humanities Source, Project Muse, JSTOR. Look for an article written by a critical author that analyzes some aspect of the play, which adds to your own interpretation and voice. Remember you can agree or disagree with a critic’s argument as a means to support your own key point and perspective. Articles should be around five plus pages long.

Follow MLA format for your paper. In terms of using sources, whether summarizing general context or background information, paraphrasing and/or quoting specific details, an author’s distinct idea needs to be cited within the body of your paper (in-text citations) as well as on the Works Cited page. If either type of citation is missing, I will return your paper and ask that you resubmit it.

Quote but don’t over quote. (Use quotes other than those in this assignment.) Quotes should make up no more than 15% of your paper. Don’t simply read for quotes or let quotes replace your explanation, analysis, or make your argument. Effective quotes are often brief (i.e. partial quotes or concise dialogue) as they highlight (not replace) an important point you want to address. When you quote from Ibsen’s play, identify the speaker and follow the quotation with a parenthetical page reference.

Paper Length and format: about 3-3½ pages (900-1000 words), MLA format, typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins, no larger than 12-point font, no italics or bold type.
