Symbol recognition is one of the first and most foundational steps to interpreting a text. For this assignment, you will craft a literary interpretation of a text by identifying a symbol pattern within it. The main point is that you identify a symbol pattern, show evidence that the pattern exists in the text (you must have at least 3 pieces of evidence for something to function as a pattern), and then base an interpretation of the text on that symbol pattern. You can discuss other patterns or other aspects of the text, but your focus must be on the central symbol pattern that you identify. Remember that a thesis statement should be debatable (not an obvious statement of fact), manageable (you can make your case within the word count), and clear. This paper must be at least 1,000 words long, typed in Times New Roman font (12pt) and must be formatted according to MLA conventions. Please upload to the Dropbox as a .doc, .docx (as text, not in “picture view”) or rtf document. Do NOT upload as a PDF.

The essay should follow this structure (though you are welcome to spend more than one paragraph developing any of your points):

First paragraph

Introduce your text, its author, and the date of its publication. Make a general statement regarding what the text is about. Identify your symbol pattern. Make a claim/take a position about how the pattern explains a non-obvious aspect of the text (this is your thesis statement).

ASSIGNMENT 1 SYMBOL RECOGNITION

Second paragraph

Explain your first piece of evidence that your symbol exists. Use a direct quote and a parenthetical citation that identifies the line(s) number(s). What is the structure of the text? Where is this piece of evidence in the text? How might it influence the reader’s expectations of the text?

Third paragraph

Explain your second piece of evidence. Use a direct quote and a parenthetical citation that identifies the line(s) number(s). Where is it located in the text? What is its relationship to the first piece of evidence? How do these two pieces of evidence together begin to suggest an interpretive direction?

Fourth paragraph

Explain your final piece of evidence. Use a direct quote and a parenthetical citation that identifies the line(s) number(s). How does it relate to your two other pieces of evidence? Where is it in the text? How does it confirm your identification of a pattern and your interpretation?

ASSIGNMENT 1 SYMBOL RECOGNITION

Fifth paragraph

Begin your conclusion by briefly summarizing your three pieces of information and how they collectively demonstrate a symbol pattern in the text. Conclude with a concise rewording of your thesis statement and a statement about why your interpretation matters (“So What?”).
