Section 1. Models of Mental Health (Approximately 600-650 words)
- Compare and contrast the key strengths and weaknesses of the Medical Model [also known as the biomedical model) with the Bio-psychosocial Model of Mental Health.
- Choose one MH Illness (g. depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder)
- Succinctly outline the main features of this MH Illness; drawing on relevant academic sources
- Discuss some of the social consequences or what is known as the social ‘knock-on effects’ people with this MH Illness may have experienced, over time, from the point of their diagnosis.
- Think about the complexity of factors also likely involved for families & close friends of the person diagnosed with your chosen MH Illness; and identify what this means for human service workers when working with consumers/service-users and their families, in this area?
Section 2. Guest speaker reflections (Approximately 320-350 words): NOTE: Work in this section does not require any academic research work (although you are welcome to include references if they are relevant).

In weeks 7 and 8 we heard from Kirsten about her experiences of working alongside people with addictions, and in week 10 we heard from Latoya about what social and emotional wellbeing for Indigenous people means and learned about her research into Aboriginal deaths in custody. Choose one of these speakers and discuss three key points that stood out for you.

Section 3. Practice Approaches & Skills (Approximately 320-350 words)
- Discuss in some depth and detail three different engagement-based skills that are critical when seeking to build an effective ongoing relationship with consumers/service-users in the area of MH, and why?
- Discuss your understanding of social work-based Mental Health assessment approaches and practices as taught throughout this course.
Section 4. Working with Diverse Groups drawing on a Population Health Approach
Choose a specific population group (e.g. youth, older people, women, refugee groups, rural populations, people who identify as LGBTQI).
(a) Succinctly outline the main Mental Health challenges facing this population group as a whole; in terms of their mental health and wellbeing, and why? (100 words)
(b) Discuss a Public Health approach targeting your chosen population group that includes an understanding of the key principles of a Public Health approach (500-550 words)
- Give concrete examples of each of the three different Public Health intervention levels [as set out below] in relation to addressing the Mental Health problems facing your chosen population group
- primary interventions – health promotion & prevention strategies
- secondary interventions – early detection & early intervention strategies
- tertiary interventions – more direct and acute care consumers/service-users practices/rehabilitation

Reading Material/Academic Sources for Assessment 2: Draw upon the essential and extra readings from each week and from other referenced materials found in lecture slides and in the inventory of extra resources. You can also demonstrate your ability to search for appropriate supporting literature with the use of other, peer reviewed materials found through the UniSA Library. When looking for additional resources to support your essay and argument, remember that this is a Mental Health in the Human Services course specifically embedded in the discipline of social work, (not business management, tourism, accounting etc). Therefore, your paper needs to demonstrate your engagement with the framework and ideas presented in this course.

Question? Can I use headings in my paper?
Answer. Yes
Question? Does the 10% rule for wordcount apply?
Answer. Yes, therefore, the wordcount for this paper is strictly between 1800 and 2000 words (not including the reference list, but including in-text references and headings). If you are under the word count, it is likely that you will not have addressed the essay question in any depth. DO NOT GO OVER WORD COUNT—we will not consider any content which goes over 2000 words.
Question? How do you want the paper formatted?
Answer. You can use any font which is easy on the eye, eg. Not Harrington or Algerian or Chiller. I think 1.5 spacing is best, you can use 1.15 or as much as 2, but please, do not use single spacing. Create decent sized margins, and having some white space around your writing will make your paper easier to read—and therefore mark. We do not print your papers, so you can be generous with how many pages you use for your paper.
Question? How many references should I use?
Answer. 10-12 ‘academic’ peer reviewed references (eg books, book chapters, journal articles as a minimum—if you are unsure, check with the library). If you need to use a government report or statistics to support your argument you can, but they are not considered ‘academic’ references. Please, start all of your literature searches from within the UniSA Library Homepage—use either Search the Library Catalogue or through the Google Scholar link, rather than just through Google. https://www.library.unisa.edu.au/
Once you have met the criteria of 12 academic, peer reviewed references, you can also use Ted Talks, The Conversation, YouTube scholarly lectures or other resources such as a novel or film to support your paper and to provide texture, colour and movement to your writing, but they are not counted as academic references.
I welcome and encourage you to use the perspectives of people with lived experience of the issue you are addressing—whether they be academics or write in alternative media or publications—but, you still must meet the 10-12 peer reviewed resource minimum.

Question? Can I use direct quotes in my paper?
Answer. Yes, you can, but with the following caveats:
Short, phrase or sentence length quotes can be used sparingly.
In a paper of this length, you can use only one long quote. A long quote is 30+ words. Long quotes also require specific formatting. They tend to be inset from the main body of the text, have a smaller spacing and one size smaller font than the main body of the paper.
If you use a short or a long quote, you should endeavour to introduce it yourself, and then segue out of the quote. We do not want to see the quoted material doing all of the work for you. You MUST situate your quote within “quotation marks”, and you MUST include page numbers: eg (Jarldorn, 2019, p. 327). If the resource you are using does not have page numbers, them indicate a paragraph number: eg (Jarldorn, 2020, para. 4)
