Instructions

Self-analysis and self-reflection may help an individual to enhance the modification process for better conflict management and communication in organisational setting. Thus, considering all these features, you are to write a reflective essay.

Reflecting on your self-identity and understanding of the tools used in this unit (Johari Window, MBTI, and DISC) you are to write a reflective essay on how these tools and exercises have helped you to improve your own identity, attitudes, personality traits and behaviours in terms of conflict management and communication in an organisational setting. You will draw on conflict scenarios you were participant to for analysis.

Note: While speaking from personal perspective, it is still important to still use good academic research to back up your statements. You may use ‘I’ statements, but aim to be objective and avoid drawing on opinion

BUSN304 Working with Diversity and Conflict Assessment 3

– draw on your documented self-assessment or research instead.

Structure

This task has a 6-part structure

  1. Introduction (200 words, appx)

An introduction that includes any definition and provides the purpose and outline of your essay

  2. Self-analysis (550 words appx)

Use this space to define diversity and tell us what you have learned about yourself from conducting self- assessment and analysing your personal background using the tools from weeks 2 and 3. You should also elaborate on the tools themselves and what they do. Tell us your strengths and weaknesses based on these assessments and how this might affect your ability to interact in a diverse organisational setting.

    Questions to consider:

    • What makes you diverse?
    • What have you learnt from self-analysis from the use of the Johari Window, MBTI, or DiSC
    • What is the history or scholarship behind the tools?
  3. Conflict experiences (800 words appx)

Provide one example from your work experience (or failing that, university experience) where you failed to manage conflict. That means the conflict was unresolved or ended unfavourably. Use this example to demonstrate your understanding of conflict and conflict theory (draw on week 6 materials). You should also identify how your experience in this conflict is reflective of your self-assessment as well as your Thomas- Kilmann conflict handling mode.

    Points to include to:

    • what the conflict situation was, (what was the nature of conflict, reason of conflict, and who were involved)? – keep this emotionless and objective
    • why you failed, (do you think because of your unawareness, or difference in personality style, or communication style – refer to Johari window, MBTI, DISC)
    • what you would do now in that context (draw on appropriate and considered conflict management techniques)
  4. Conclusions (200 words appx)

Provide a short conclusion summing up your key learnings, including your future management techniques.

  5. References (does not count towards word count)

This assignment requires at least 10 academic sources published in the last 5 years. These must be of high quality, so refer to academic literature through the ACU library or Google Scholar. Government and official sources are also approved. Your readings for each week are a good place to start.

BUSN304 Working with Diversity and Conflict Assessment 3

Please ensure your essay makes use of in-text citations and a reference list. Missing citations or references is equivalent to plagiarism.

6. Appendices (does not count towards word count)

In an Appendix, insert your results from each tool and instrument discussed (one appendix per tool).

Reference these appropriately.

    knowledge of the topics)

  2. Self-analysis using tools (tools are explained and used with appropriate theory applied)
  3. Evaluation of self-attitude, behaviour and personality traits reflecting the tools. (evaluation is considered and insightful)

  5. Evidence of research (minimum 10 academic sources, no more than 5 years old)
  6. Harvard Referencing (all sources are cited in-text and in a ref list, in accurate ACU Harvard style)
