For this essay, you must respond to each of the following prompts in a single, coherent essay:
1. How do (1) primordialism and (2) constructivism explain the development of ethnic
identity?
2. How do each of these two theories explain episodes of violent political conflict? In your
answer to this question, you must refer to at least two of the following countries:
Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Zambia, and Malawi.
3. In your opinion, which theory provides the more convincing explanation of ethnic
violence, primordialism or constructivism? Why?
Format
Your essay must be written in 12-point Times New Roman font (or an equivalent font), double spaced, with no additional spacing between paragraphs, and with 1” margins on all sides. Page numbers must be included in the lower-right corner. Your name and the title “POLS 230: Essay#2” must be included at the top of the first page. Papers must be between 1,200 and 1,800 words in length; points will be deducted from your grade if your paper does not meet these formatting requirements (including the word limit).
