Instructions for the Written Assignment
For this assignment, you will use an understanding of the key core functions of public health as outlined in the 1988 Institute of Medicine report entitled The Future of Public Health and referenced on page 83 of the Wilensky and Teitelbaum text. In addition, you should become familiar with the 10 Essential Services of Public Health that are outlined in Table 5-1, page 83 of the text.
Assignment Focus- Consider the Covid-19 situation in your community or in your state and develop a plan for going forward to address emerging and re-emerging issues. Use the core public health functions of assessment, policy development, and assurance as well as an understanding of the 10 essential services of public health as the basis for your plan. Also, address the following points in your written response:
- What public health activities and programs should be developed and implemented related to each core function?
- What would be the role of the federal government particularly the CDC, NIH, and HRSA?
- How do the 10 essential public health services outlined in Table 5-1 apply to your plan for potential future episodes of Covid-19 or other pandemics?
- How would the role of law apply to elements of your plan?
- Examine the roles played by non-government organizations (NGOs) as well as health care professionals and your local or state health care delivery systems
- What lessons can be learned from the current Covid-19 situation about the importance of linkages between public health and these partners?
- How would your plan focus on points related to economics, political and social issues including matters of health equity?
- What evaluation elements would be embedded into your plan to ensure an adequate and effective future response to health emergencies of this nature?Be sure to be specific in your applications of both public health functions and essential services and include a developed conclusion about the “take-aways” from the current Covid-19 situation that can be applied to future health emergency scenarios.
