Imagine that you will present a paper on your topic (cross-cultural suicide, International Aid, Trade, Kurdish conflict, micro-financing) to an eager audience. Your task is to write a keynote address that makes a connection between your own life (or someone you know) and the topic you have researched. As a model for this assignment, I am giving you a conference paper that I wrote a few years back. (I have never in all the years that I have taught shared with students something that I have wrote, and I do so only to give you a model of what I am looking for.) If my topic doesn’t work for you, remember that you have already seen a TED talk for this course. Jessica Jackley also does a similar thing — tying her life journey to a topic with social relevance. Here are the guidelines: You must use select quotes from the sources that you read. You don’t need a lot of quotes. Choose wisely, though. Tie in a narrative that focuses on your own path in life, choosing to discuss aspects that connect with the quotes and your topic. So, for example, if you are writing on the Kurdish conflict, write pieces on what you know from your own experience to be true about conflict between different people. The final draft of the paper should be six pages in length. (The working draft can be 4 – 6 pages.) Try with each couple sentences to try one of the sentence structures we’ve practiced this term. If you get a perfect score on a quiz, who cares! If you can improve your writing, then that’s something long-lasting!
