ENC 1102 Essay 3 Assignment

ENC 1102: Essay#3 (1500 words/5 pages minimum)

FORMAT: Typed and double-spaced in MLA format.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of an argumentative essay is to argue a certain topic and utilize/synthesize your secondary sources to support that topic. In doing so, your concise analysis will enhance the reader’s understanding of the topic under consideration

  • A good analysis provides a valuable point of view, a way of seeing, a way of interpreting some element of the primary source (the novel) that otherwise may appear random or unexplainable. Your job is to make the implicit explicit.
    • A synthesis is a written discussion that draws on two or more sources in which you make explicit the relationships that you inferred among separate sources.
  • Comparing and contrasting is a form of synthesis. You compare different criteria in order to make a larger point about the subject under consideration. Thus, comparing and contrasting is more than laying out similarities and differences in a paper side-by-side, but is about pointing out those points of comparison and contrast and then analyzing their significance

  • You will locate TWO secondary sources. Both must come from the library’s journal database. This is the ONLY location to be used—no websites, or content from anywhere else is acceptable and will result in loss of points.

TOPIC: Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is a work of speculative fiction that depicts a dystopian society in which a totalitarian, Christian theocracy has overthrown the United States government. The result is Gilead, which is a woman’s world, even though it is governed and policed by men. Women are strictly controlled, unable to have jobs or money, and assigned to various classes based on household functions.

WRITING TASKS: As you outline and draft your essay, keep the following in mind:

  • The thesis should be a two-part X as a means to Y statement that begins with the author’s last name, and establishes your topic in clear, unambiguous language.
  • A key part of the assignment is your synthesis of your sources. Select and carefully read your sources, according to your purpose. Re-read the sources, mentally summarizing each. Identify those aspects or parts of your sources that will help you in fulfilling your purpose. When rereading, label or underline the passages for main ideas, key terms, and any details you want to use in the synthesis.
  • Your synthesis and explanation/discussion should utilize specific examples from the text.
  • Develop each analysis paragraph thoroughly. Use specific examples and source materials appropriately as support. Be sure to integrate source materials smoothly into your own writing using attribution phrases and transitions.
  • Utilize literary present tense.
  • Your conclusion should expand on your evaluation and explain the significance of your topic.
  • The essay should use proper Modern Language Association (MLA) formatting – this means one-inch margins on all sides and twelve point Times New Roman font. If you are unsure of format, consult the many online MLA sources available.
  • Quadruple check your MLA documentation. Are your parenthetical citations correct? Is your Works Cited list correct according to MLA style, and does it include all sources cited in your essay?
  • While mistakes are inevitable, I expect all drafts to be thoroughly proofread.
