ENC1101 Argument Analysis Assignment Topic: Write a rhetorical evaluation of one of the following recent opinion essays published by the indicated
newspaper, which are available on Canvas under the Week 14 Module or through your internet browser:
___ “A Chance to Come Together on Climate Change” by Susan Nugent, Gainesville Sun
___ “UF Plan for In-Person Classes Is Poorly Conceived” by Editorial Board, Gainesville Sun
___ “We Agree: End the War on Drugs” by Nicholas Kristof, New York Times
___ “Why We Are Canceling Our Family Thanksgiving Trip This Year” by Kate Cohen, Washington Post
Purpose: Your purpose is to evaluate the quality of the essay’s argument techniques. You will need to critique how
effectively the essay meets several criteria (or qualities) we look for in a good argument. Chapter 38 in The Norton
Field Guide discusses the main criteria for arguments. You may focus on logical fallacies, type of appeal (emotion,
logic, or credibility), addressing the opposition, etc. You should NOT focus on why you agree or disagree. (You
might agree with the author and still criticize the essay as being badly written, and vice versa.)
