In all research, we must guard against the fallacy of the false dilemma, also known as the either/or fallacy. Despite the way in which controversies are portrayed by many media outlets, most issues of consequence have more than two sides, so if we oversimplify an issue into only two sides, we are guilty of fallacious reasoning, which is a serious breach of critical thinking. In fact, some issues—such as whether the Holocaust happened or whether humans walked on the moon—have only one side, and anyone who does not accept that fact of history is either ignorant or irrational.

For this assignment, you will write an article providing your readers with a broad understanding of the debate over a topic (see the instructions below). You will need to research a wide variety of sources (e.g. books, periodicals, web sites, films, television and radio shows) that relate directly to the topic and find the similarities and the differences among those sources in terms of the points at issue in the debate. Instead of a direct argument about one side of the topic, your article should present a more far-reaching perspective, examining many sides and branching out into related issues that help shed light on the topic.

A successful response to this assignment requires you to apply the same scrutiny to your sources for this assignment that you applied to the article for your A2 rhetorical analysis. You know that the article represents an author’s viewpoint, so you treated that text as one voice, not “truth.” Thinking of a text as an author’s voice it easier when it is blatantly an opinion piece, but we often don’t think of other texts that way. In reality, all texts represent an author’s voice and viewpoints. Even sources that sound like they are reporting objective facts are often really reporting the author’s perception of the topic at hand.

Assignment Instructions

  1. Read the following:
  • In TMHG, Chapter 3, “Writing to Understand and Synthesize Texts” and Chapter 7, “Writing to Inform.”
  • In TSIS, read Part II, “I Say.”
  1. Write a 2,000 – 2,500 word research-based essay to inform your readers about the variety of viewpoints on one of the questions posed by the five groups of essays in the “Readings” section of TSIS:
  • How Can We Bridge the Differences that Divide Us?
  • Is College the Best Option?
  • Are We in a Race Against the Machine?
  • What’s Gender Got to Do With It?
  • What’s There to Eat?
  1. Try to explore as many different sides of the issue as feasible. In other words, your essay should answer the question, “What topics or opinions are relevant to the question at issue?” The purpose of this assignment is NOT for you to take a side and argue for it. If you cannot resist taking a side, do so only in the conclusion, and only if your “side” makes sense given the sources you have presented in your essay. Your draft for peer and instructor review should NOT be an annotated bibliography that has simply been formatted to look like an essay (if it is, you will not receive credit for it). However, you might find it useful to prepare an annotated bibliography as a preliminary step along the way to preparing your first draft for peer review. See page 173 in TMHG.

b.    Identify a thesis for your essay. All nonfiction writing must have a point, a thesis, and most thesis statements appear somewhere in the introduction portion of a text. However, just because the thesis goes at the beginning of the paper, that does not mean you should narrow in on a thesis at the beginning of your writing process.

The challenge of synthesis is to wait to develop a thesis until the end of your research and prewriting process. If you can hold off your natural urge to commit to a thesis early, the thesis will nearly write itself. Through your research, you should notice the ways in which your sources agree and disagree. When those points of agreement and disagreement come up, stated in various ways, in several sources, you should be able to pin down the major points of debate within your overall topic. If you can write down those major points of debate in your own words, you should be able to craft them into a thesis for your own essay, one that reflects those major points of debate.
