ENG 101 Essay 3 Understanding conspiracies

ENG 101 – Fall I 2020

Dr. Lilla Tőke

Essay nr. 3: Understanding conspiracies.

Length: 1,300 words minimum (please include a word count at the end of your paper)

The problem:

Why do people hold false or unsupported beliefs and why are those beliefs so hard to change? What is the cultural and psychological incentive behind conspiracy theories? These questions are important as they reveal the core nature of the human psyche, our society, and communication. In this essay, you have a chance to explore what makes people vulnerable to misinformation/conspiracy theories and the reasons why corrections often fail to change their minds. Based on the conspiracy you chose earlier in the semester, in this essay you will explore the nature of conspiracy theories, how they spread, why they captivate people and why they seem so resistant to truth.

ENG 101 Essay 3 Understanding conspiracies

Questions to consider as you are thinking critically about the artifact:

  • What is the cultural and psychological incentive behind conspiracy theories?
  • What do conspiracy narratives accomplish?
  • What do they explain about our own experience—especially of freedom, the exercise of power, and what counts as knowledge?

Process

As you write this, you will need to understand the conspiracy theory itself (efforts that support it as well as attempts to debunk it) and you will also look for secondary (at least 4 non-scholarly and 2 scholarly) sources that examine conspiracy theories from a psychological, religious, political, or social perspective.

Purpose

The purpose of your writing is to convince readers about one important idea/view that you developed by studying conspiracy theories. Your thesis will state this idea and every paragraph will support the idea. Your evidence will come from primary sources (the conspiracy theory you chose) and secondary sources (studies about conspiracy theories).

Audience

You should imagine your most immediate audience as your roommates and classmates. But your wider audience is the academic community in general–anyone who might look at the front page and wonder how it was created. Do not assume that your audience knows anything about conspiracy theories in general, or the particular issue. You need to give extensive background information, provide definitions of important terms, and in general explain everything to your readers in plain language, but not using slang, colloquialisms, etc. that are common in oral speech or informal writing.

Formatting:

All essays in this course MUST be typewritten using .doc or .docx format and the font Times New Roman, pt 12, double spaced. Please do not use a cover page. You will need to upload your final draft to Blackboard.
