  The components of the Toulmin method include: 1. Claim

  2. Qualifier 3. Warrant 4. Backing 5. Grounds 6. Rebuttal

  Review course materials to learn more about each of these. Remember that these are not paragraphs in the essay, but parts of the argument. The essay should still follow basic essay format including an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, support from research throughout, evidence of research synthesis, and a concluding paragraph.

  Sources

  A minimum of 5 scholarly, peer reviewed journal articles, published in the last 5 years, and located through databases found on the library’s website.

  Use all sources throughout the essay to help you present the backing for the qualifier and warrant, the grounds for the claim, and the counterargument with rebuttal.

  Additional sources can consist of quality sources of your choosing that contain current, relevant, accurate, authoritative, and purposeful information to support your thesis statement. No additional points are awarded for extra sources, but you should consider that all sources should be used with purpose when incorporated in the essay and annotated on the Annotated Bibliography.

Deductions for missing sources are made to the Annotated Bibliography grade, including an additional 10-point deduction for each missing scholarly source.

The Annotated Bibliography is the Works Cited page with one additional step. Include annotations beneath each bibliographic entry. The goal of each annotation is to show your knowledge of the source, its credibility, and how the source works in the essay.

Each annotation will include your developed and well-written discussion of the purpose of using the source, the connection to other sources, and the evaluation of the source. Include 2-3 sentences for each component.

Please note: The Annotated Bibliography does not count towards the 5-page requirement for the essay. This is a separate, yet equally important grade.
